How the 90/180 rule works

If you hold a UK passport, or another passport that doesn’t need a Schengen visa, you can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area. The 180 days are a moving window: on any day, look back 180 days and count every day you were inside. That count must not go over 90.

  • Entry and exit days both count as full days.
  • It’s one zone. Days in France, Spain and Germany all add up together.
  • Some European countries are outside it, including the UK, Ireland, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and Türkiye, so time there doesn’t count. Their own entry rules still apply.
  • Borders now record it automatically. The EU Entry/Exit System logs every entry and exit, so overstays are easy to spot.
